8 Things to Look for in a Power Chair
22 April 2013
When you are in the market for a power chair there are a lot of questions and it’s not always easy to know what you are looking for. Though we stand by our chair 100%, it might not be right for everyone. In any case, we put together 8 things to look for in a power chair to help you find your perfect fit: 1Comfort – In many cases a power chair is someone’s only form of mobility and spending a lot of time in one warrants a chair that is comfortable to avoid potential troubles like pressure sores or overall discomfort. Make sure your power chair has the comfort and support you need so as to not interfere with your power chair experience. 2Adjustability – If you are in a power chair all day, it is important to have one that adjusts because the health benefits of standing are enormous–even chairs that tilt can offer much relief on the other parts of the body. Adjustability can be an excellent means of therapy if you are always in your chair. 3Shear Mechanism – Shear is friction on the skin caused by being dragged across a surface and a chair that reduces shear is much more comfortable. If your chair adjusts, look for one with a good shearing mechanisms so your chair moves with you and not against you. 4 Speed – If you are only using your power chair at home, speed doesn’t matter much. If you like to get out, ask about how fast your chair can go if you are interested in speed; some go up to 11 mph and a few are able to go off road too! 5Trained Staff and Technicians – Buying a power chair is much more personal than buying a car so look [...]

The Medicare review board has determined that the Redman Standing Power Chair has “tilt in space” functionality, a feature with crucial health benefits covered by them, but the Redman Power Chair has so much more. You know that the features in the Redman Power Chair are what sets it apart from its competition, the chair comes equipped with a plethora of features STANDARD and has numberous additional options to choose from, but one standard option has benefits that even insurance companies recognize as important, tilt in space. In order to determine if this is a good fit for you, you might ask yourself what is tilt in space functionality? Why do I need it, and how does traditional tilt differ from what the Redman Power Chair can do? Tilt in space is a technology on some power chairs and wheelchairs that rotates the chair on its base so that pressure is redistributed from one area of the body to another while maintaining the angles the body is in. It can be an excellent means of increasing skin perfusion by relieving pressure and allowing weight to be distributed in different areas of the body, reducing the risk of postural collapse, and increasing lung capacity. But because the body stays in the same position, the user is unable to get the full benefit of stretching, reclining, and even tilting while standing, all standard features of the Redman Power Chair. Traditional tilt does not truly reposition your body, it only changes your place in space. Not only does the Redman Power Chair have tilt in space technology, but it offers standing tilt and weight-bearing tilt features that deliver even more benefits to its users among other features and specifications. Weight-bearing tilts slow down the progression of osteoporosis by allotting pressure to different joints [...]
Conquer the 2012 Holiday Season with 6 Tips from Redman
19 November 2012
With the holidays right around the corner, everyone is scrambling to get their holiday shopping taken care of, and fast. Having a solid plan of action can be an extremely beneficial component in making sure your shopping experience is a positive one, because shopping in a power chair or wheelchair has its perks and setbacks. Keep these tips in mind so as to not be overwhelmed and overburdened with this holiday task. 1. Sleep Well Nothing can prepare us better for the following morning than the night before, and nothing beats a good night’s rest. Though your feet might not get tired in your Redman Power Chair, you can still wear yourself out, and your good holiday cheer can turn into the ba-humbug’s pretty quickly when you’re tired. 2. Be Prepared Make a list, stick to it, research the stores you are going to before you go there and map out where the products are located so that you can get in and out quickly. If you have a smart phone, there are several resources for locating products in a store, try Good Guide, and ShopSavy. These apps let you scan a barcode and not only will it tell you exactly where in the store that item is located, but whether or not the price is right. 3. Keep Sustained Before you head out, make sure you eat a balanced breakfast and pack yourself a snack for later on in the day if you don’t plan on stopping for a meal. Trail mixes and Smart Water are great tools to keep on hand. Nuts offer an excellent source of protein, and Smart Water has electrolytes to keep your body working to the best of its ability. Keep yourself hydrated and full to maintain energy throughout the day. And don’t forget take frequent [...]

Brian has a rich history with motorcycle design, fabrications, and repair, all excellent skills that carry over well to our fabrication team. Brian is currently training to “kit” the chairs, which is where we bring all the parts together for assembly. He’s a real team player and we are very happy to have him on board. Rosa is a certified coder, and is proficient in medical terminology, an important skill when working to get insurance approvals for new Redman Power Chair users!

It has been proven that standing exercises and therapies drastically improve the quality of life of power chair users, but it can often be a trivial task determining exactly what therapy or standing device is right for them. For many, a standing frame is the answer, but in too many cases, patients tire of standing frames because of the difficult task to transfer into them and lack of mobility. The Redman Power Chair team provides a product that eliminates the problems of the standing frame and gives its users more independence and access to a way of life they never thought possible. What is a Standing Frame? The Standing Frame or Stander is an assistive technology that allows disabled person into the standing position. Users generally need assistance to transfer themselves into the frame while in the sitting position and utilize a range of controls to maneuver into the standing position. Standing frames like EasyStand and StandAid are an innovative form of technology used in hospitals, rehabs, and in-home, and can be used as exercise or stretching equipment. Standing frames come in several different makes and models and offer varied positions. If you haven’t yet, read about the health benefits of standing to truly understand the benefit and impact these devices have on their users and take a look at this: Participants in a study by advanceweb.com lost almost no bone mineral density when being involved in early loading exercises (like standing) as opposed to 6.9-9.4% loss in sedentary patients According to CNN, insulin works 40% better when our muscles are firing, and they do so when standing Getting spinal injury patients into the upright position daily is beneficial for circulation and kidney function – Professor Jan Ritchie from UNSW School of Public Health and Community Medicine Though they are a [...]

Raves About Redman
25 September 2012
Redman Power Chair and our newest customer testimonial video by Bob Nedens was mentioned in a news article from Agora Financial’s “Breakthrough Technology Alert”. Here is the snippet and the video: “Imagine how much better off we would be today if the resources wasted on the stimulus had gone into innovation. It’s innovation, after all, that creates growth and sustainable employment. I’m not sure which group irritates me more, the promoters of big government spending or the short attackers who are using the UCSD study to scare investors away from regenerative medicine. Both groups are slowing human progress while prolonging and multiplying suffering.Just to put a human face on this real struggle we are fighting against ignorance, I’d like to tell you about my cousin’s husband, Bob Nedens. Nine years ago, he was an active horseman and private pilot. An off-road accident crushed his spine. Today, he’s quadriplegic, though he has begun to recover some movement because his spine is injured, but intact. Bob has never lost hope or his love of life, and he works hard on his therapies. He also has the benefit of new technologies that make his life far better than it would have been not long ago. For years, he and his wife have raved about his Redman power chair . Because he lives on a ranch located in very rugged portion of the Crow Indian Reservation, power chairs that would suffice in city conditions won’t do the job. He needs an “off-road” power chair Chief 107ZRx. I’ve seen him use it, via a command menu controlled by a breathing tube. It’s pretty remarkable, and it wouldn’t be possible without recent advances in computer technology. We’re all grateful for that technology, but regenerative medicine will someday cure spinal cord injuries. Fully severed spinal cords present far more [...]
Why the Redman Standing Wheelchair Makes all other Wheelchairs and Standing Frames Obsolete:
24 September 2012
The wheelchair has been around since the late 16th century and no one can deny the amazing effect it has had on the disabled community. It has given those with challenged mobility the ability to be self sufficient, and to go where they had trouble going before. Advances in the wheelchair and standing frames have brought us to the amazing technologies our time has to offer. Though these advances are a huge milestone for many, a typical wheelchair and standing frame can often be problematic for the user. Redefining the wheelchair is the key, and the Redman Standing Power Wheelchair does just that. Here’s how: No More Restrictions The Redman Standing Power Wheelchair offers a vast range of positioning that the traditional wheelchair cannot match–this means fewer restrictions and more freedom. Standing – Redman Power Chair users have the unique ability of being able to not only stand, but to move while standing. Utilizing the standing position offers invaluable health benefits (click to learn about the health benefits of standing wheelchairs). It also means having eye-to-eye conversations with others and also means having the ability to reach for things without the help of another person. Redman Power Wheelchair users are independent and able to see life from an angle standard wheelchair users cannot. Reclining – The Redman Standing Power Wheelchair is unique in that it gives you the ability to recline. Being able to recline means better comfort for your back and torso by allowing it to rest from the sitting position. It also means easier transfer. Redman’s chair compensates for body movement and its arms adjust automatically during the reclining process so that you can easily transfer directly from the laying position onto a bed with less effort than with a traditional chair. Stretching – Due to the amazing [...]
Too Tall Texan Greg Birt Rides Again
17 September 2012
Greg Birt and his wife couldn’t be happier to have a Redman Chief 107-ZRx, look at those smiles. Greg is from Texas, and everything is bigger in Texas, including Greg, now that he is standing in his new Redman chair. Greg is almost 6’5″ and hasn’t stood in many years–no wonder his wife is smiling. Greg researched other chairs but once he got behind the wheel of our new Chief, he was set. We believe Greg and his wife will have a new outlook now that Greg is standing again. This could be the first step toward a brand new life. Greg enjoys the ability of his new Chief to get him around outdoors, to breathe fresh air, to traverse uneven terrain, and to add new value to his life. Our wish is for the smiles to never end for Greg and his wife and we are excited to hear what Greg is doing in his Redman chair.

James Bessent - Enjoying His New Custom Painted Chief 107-ZRx
11 September 2012
James “Bengal” Bessent recently received his new Redman Chief 107-ZRx Blackhawk edition with a custom urban-camo paint job in orange. Check it out. We haven’t asked James but we think he could be a Bengal’s fan, what do you think? James graduated from a typical body positioning chair, an Invacare TDX to one with “chairapy”. Important to note in James case, and many others, he also had a mobility standing frame that wasn’t getting utilized due to its inability to move, difficulty transferring, and boredom. With the Redman chair, James can adjust himself in countless positions increasing blood flow and giving him the ability to move, stretch, bend, and flex. We believe James is going to enjoy this season with his new Redman chair.
4 Things to keep your Redman Power Chair Humming
04 September 2012
Keep It Clean. Like anything that has moving parts, your Redman Power Chair should be cleaned from time to time. You can use a spray bottle with soapy water for general cleaning, but take care to not get water in or around the electronics, motors, and connecters. For tougher cleaning, you can use a small amount of WD-40. Use computer dust-off to keep all the dust from accumulating on moving parts. Keep It Lubricated. Use WD-40 liberally on all of the hinged points and sewing machine oil where indicated in your manual. It’s good to lubricate every 30 days, or as needed when you hear a squeak. Remember this rule of thumb: If it is squeaking it is wearing. Keep It Charged. If you are using your chair every day you should be charging every day. A typical charge will take 8 hours. Try to never drive in the red zone on your charge indicator to avoid getting stranded without power. Driving in the red zone will unduly shorten the life of your battery. Keep It Cool. Our power chair can take a lot of abuse, but like anything, heat can take a toll. When maneuvering in tight places on soft surfaces (especially carpeting) you are using incredible amounts of energy and that equals heat. That heat will shorten the life of the motor and controller on you power chair. The key to a long life for your power chair is to minimize this kind of use. Do you have a question on how to keep your Redman Power Chair humming? Got a suggestion of your own? Let us know in the comments below!

We want to share a heart warming story from Nancy Devore, who recently received her new Blackhawk power chair. Thanks for sharing Nancy! “Our daughter Shelby’s wedding was two weeks ago at our farm. Just thought you would enjoy these pics. We really wanted to thank “The Redman Family” for designing the Redman Power chair . There weren’t too many dry eyes on the dance ‘field” when it came time for Rob and me to share the spotlight and dance at our daughter’s wedding.” ~Nancy Devore
Lucy in the sky with diamonds | Redman Power Chair
22 August 2012
Lucy Currier of Birmingham, UK has her head in the clouds after receiving her new Redman Standing Wheelchair. Her eyes sparkled like diamonds after she got professionally fitted by Sam Redman, who made the special trip to deliver her chair. Lucy replaced her old Permobil power chair with a new Redman Chief 107ZRx after an exhaustive search for the perfect chair. What drew her to our chair was the ability to stand, our low seat height, the small foot-print, and mid-wheel drive capability. In her words, she likes our chair because “it’s not so big and it doesn’t feel like a clunker.” More importantly, Lucy liked the drive and the ride, especially on the uneven streets of her town. In the UK, the sidewalks are quite old and uneven, making it a challenge for even the most sturdy of chairs. The Redman Chief 107ZRx performed perfectly because of its uneven ground compensation and four wheel suspension, making Lucy’s ride faster, smoother, and with greater response and control. We are very pleased with how she looked and fit in her new Redman power chair.
A look at the backbone of the Redman Chief 107 ZRx
07 August 2012
The quality of a Redman Power Chair is built in, not added on, and it all starts with the back-bone of the Chief 107 ZRx, the frame. We struggle with simply using the word frame, because it truly means so much more. Our frame is uniquely one piece that is tailored for each individual user according to their unique physical needs. Our approach to building the very best power chair available is not cheap. It’s taken over 20 years to perfect one design, completely integrating the unique design features of the Redman Power Chair, to give you a unified design that out-performs any other reclining, standing power chair. It’s built by a family owned company right here in the USA. We don’t add standing on as a feature…it’s built in. Want to recline? We designed and built it in from the beginning. Is this more expensive to build? You bet it is. But it’s worth it to have the durability and vastly improved performance. A Redman Power Chair has the smallest footprint of any reclining, standing power chair, allowing you to access your environment in ways you never thought possible. Indoors, outdoors, in your vehicle, at the office, and even in small, hard to navigate places like the bathroom. We think it’s a thing of beauty. And it all starts with a frame. The backbone of the Chief 107 ZRx Redman Power Chair. Click here for a free demo.
Mike Murphy
10 July 2012
Mike Murphy is celebrating 14 years of employment with Redman Power Chair. His time as a customer service technical adviser has shown us just how much Mike values working with Redman customers. When something needs to be done, Mike is a roll-your-sleeves-up kind of guy that we can always count on to get things done. We are proud to celebrate this milestone with Mike, and we look forward to the next 14 years!

Wayne did a lot of searching to find the right chair for his needs, and in the end he chose the Redman Chief 107ZRx power chair from all the others he looked at. The key factors in his decision were comfort and quality. Wayne test drove the Permobil C500 Stander power chair and felt it was big, bulky, and did not meet his needs. Wayne had this to say about his new power chair: ”I wanted a chair that’s going to last, that’s of good quality parts, good service…and I think I’ve got the right…I KNOW I’ve got the right system.” He goes on to say, “You don’t need to look any further. The Redman Power Chair is the best one on the market.” Enjoy this video of Wayne’s entire testimonial, and then give us a call to schedule a free demo of the Redman Chief 107ZRx power chair to experience it for yourself. Jeff has been responsible for enhancing the safety and durability of our product and the continuation of innovation that is the hallmark of the Redman line of reclining/standing wheelchairs.
We saw an article today on Consumer.Healthday.com about wheelchair breakdowns increasing and we wanted to address some key points from the article. In the article (which you can read here) results from a recent study published in the American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation showed that “roughly 53% of wheelchair users reported at least one breakdown requiring repairs within six months – up from 45% between 2004 and 2006.” The study was based on results from 700 people with a spinal cord injury. We at Redman Power Chair think this is a sad commentary on the state of the wheelchair market. What this research suggests is that some of our competitors are selling on price alone, resulting in lower quality chairs that they know Medicare and Medicaid reimburse for. While this meets the immediate needs of a large number of users, we have always built the best quality power chair available, no matter what the reimbursement amount is. It’s an important part of our mission statement – “To provide the finest standing power chair available supported by the best company in the business.” Our chair may cost more, but we believe your quality of life is the most important thing and that the health benefits and durability of our product are well worth the extra cost. We realize not everyone can afford our chair, so as an outreach we have developed an affordable payment plan where customers can make payments on a new Redman Power Chair. This allows more people to afford a higher quality, more therapeutic reclining and standing wheelchair. Contact our sales team or request a demo for more information.
The Health Benefits of Standing Wheelchairs
26 April 2012Many people who can stand do not understand the amazing benefits of being able to do so. Such as independence and the naturally occurring health benefits from changing posture. When someone is forced to sit in one position for extreme amount of time, health problems will naturally occur. In fact, physicians have been documenting the benefits of standing devices for years throughout medical publications. Now, thanks to Redman Power chair, the world’s highest quality standing wheelchair, even people with spinal cord injuries can reap the health benefits of standing. Physical Benefits of Standing Wheelchairs Urinary Health – Urinary Tract Infections are common among people who are in wheelchairs. However, studies have shown that using a standing device or standing wheelchair can greatly decrease urinary tract infections. Circulation – Changing posture helps the blood circulate around the body. For example, sitting in one position causes the blood to stagnate and reduce circulation to other places of the body. Spasticity – Staying in one position, such as sitting, can cause muscle spasticity. Changing posture helps relax the muscles and reduce spasticity. Bowel Function – Poor bowel function is a common complaint among wheel chair users. However, according to numerous studies, standing exercises can greatly improve bowel function. Even when using a standing wheelchair these results are the same. Pressure Sores – Pressure sores occur from constant pressure on one area of the body. Being able to stand up in a wheelchair helps distribute your weight and improve healing of bed sores. Contractures – Sitting for long periods of time may cause the joints and muscles to stiffen. Standing allows the muscles to get stretched and exercised, decreasing the amount of stiffness you experience in joints and muscles. Bone Density – Some evidence shows that standing wheelchairs may increase bone density. This is because standing puts more weight on your [...]
Eat My Dust! Redman Power Chair Goes Off Road
25 April 2012
America’s top-selling power standing wheelchair has the ability to go off-road with its 4” ground clearance, four wheel independent suspension, and uneven ground compensation. Eat my dust! Not only can the Redman Power Chair access your world indoors with it’s superior maneuverability and small footprint, it can also go outdoors to broaden your accessibility in challenging terrain. To illustrate the off-road capabilities of the Redman Power Chair, we have put together the Eat My Dust video to show the off-road functionality. In the video we have outfitted our chair with the off-road drive wheels that are an available option. Even without the optional wheels, this chair is extremely capable of off-road driving. The optional wheels simply add more traction. “We are thrilled that power chair users continue to improve the quality of their life by going anywhere, on any terrain,” says Sam Redman, Founder and Sales Manager of Redman Power Chair “The innovation behind the ground clearance and suspension is something we are very proud of.” The 4” ground clearance has always been a feature of the Redman Power Chairs and all of the chairs are hand-built in the U.S. specific to each customer’s unique needs. It has unparalleled movement and numerous physical and psychological health benefits ranging from improved circulation to increased cognition. “Without a standing wheelchair or reclining wheelchair, users can encounter health problems.” Redman continued, “We make a chair that has always been healthier for the user and it can go on uneven, rough ground while still being stable and comfortable.” Want to learn more? We are looking forward to updating Shea to a new Blackhawk in the near future! If you are ever in Tucson, Arizona and would like a tour of our facility like Shea, stop by and we’ll give you a complimentary tune-up and a tour.

We put some Red in the Black Hawk! The new 2012 paint scheme has arrived. We added some red to our all black Redman Power Chair. It may not be as fast as a Ferrari, but now you can ride in style. Zoom into 2012 with candy red styling on your new Black Hawk.
Perry gets a new Powerchair Wheelchair
02 February 2012
Martin Montoya, Redman Power Chair’s new California representative and I recently delivered a new Chief Blackhawk 107ZRX to Perry in Mountain Lake, CA. As you can see from the video below, Perry is excited to use his new chair, and it’s no wonder. He’s finally able to stand for the first time in over 30 years! Being able to stand is a big deal to Perry, since he’s had a persistent pressure sore that will only go away if he’s able to take the pressure off the sore. Thanks to his new Blackhawk, he can do just that! Watch the video below to see his appreciation for his new found freedom.
Reaching Freedom with Redman Power Chair
22 December 2011Sam recently had some adventures in Canada, delivering a new Black Hawk to Cathy Bouthot in Chilliwack, BC. Cathy and her husband, Brian, were very happy to get her fitted for her new standing power chair. The occupational therapist, Joann, was also present to evaluate the fitting. The therapist was so impressed with our chair, she said anyone who finds out about it is going to want one. After 24 years with Multiple Sclerosis, Cathy is now able to do things again like topping the Christmas tree and helping herself to the freezer and overhead microwave. Brian sent us the following pictures with his sentiments… “Thank you Sam Redman! He endured our ravenous Canadian Border drones and brought my wife and I the best Christmas present ever! After 24 years she can stand again! Chairapy is under way! Quality materials, honest helpful service, and engineering excellence! The Original American economic model in action that will always work!” [slideshow id=1]

The Benefits of a Positionable Power Wheelchair
25 October 2011Staying or moving in a stationary position for long periods can bring on a number of health related problems, such as Carpal Tunnel, ulcer problems, and muscle weakness. Having a wheelchair that allows the body frequent movement from the sitting position can help avoid some of these issues. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome We all use our hands all day long, be it for typing, cooking, cleaning, or just turning the television on or off. For wheelchair users, this is multiplied several times further because of the constant need to get in and out of the chair and then propel the wheels, often over long distances. Carpal tunnel syndrome isn’t just a computer issue. You might be surprised to know that it can be a major problem for wheelchair users, brought on by propelling a wheelchair all day long with repetitive motions. Half of wheelchair users get this injury that often has to be dealt with through surgery. This syndrome often begins with pain or tingling in the hands, moving up the arms. Eventually arms and hands are so painful that it becomes impossible to use them as normal. Ulcer Problems Most of you will have heard of the pressure ulcers that often affect seniors when they spend a long time lying in bed without moving. Wheelchair users can also suffer from pressure ulcers when they are in a chair for long periods. Pressure ulcers are caused by the unvarying pressure and friction of bed sheets and various materials in chairs. The ulcers develop in bony areas caused by the weight of the body on pressure points. These areas are difficult to heal with the cycle of further weight on the same pressure points. This makes the person unwilling to move because of the pain. Poor circulation also causes ulcers to appear. [...]
What is the Battery Break-in Procedure?
12 October 2011All deep cycle gel batteries require a complete recharging (regardless of use) for the first 20 days of use in any power mobility product. Failure to do this could shorten the driving range, and may effect the overall life of the batteries. Please click the link to view an excerpt from our manual regarding the gel batteries break-in procedure.

Bob Nedens' Snappy New Chief 107 Black Hawk
21 September 2011
Bob Nedens is a long time Redman Power Chair user and he just received his new Chief 107 Black Hawk edition, replacing his trusty old Chief 107ZRx. Check out his superior skill on the straw… perhaps he should take up the harmonica??? Seriously though folks, this video shows Bob maneuvering with the ultimate of precision while testing out his new chair at our headquarters in Tucson, Arizona. The new Black Hawk is very “snappy” according to Bob, and it was very easy for him to tune into the new speedier and precise frame geometry. He was so good, I didn’t even flinch when he headed in my direction!
Design Control Meeting
21 June 2011
What happens in a Redman Power Chair design control meeting? When Don & Sam Redman meet with Steve and Mike from the Redman production department, they put their heads together to critique each others ideas to build a better product. They recently discussed thoughts about improving the “Boomerang” attachment, which replaces the previous gear assembly. It currently allows you to add all the weight one could reasonably apply to the arm rest while keeping the system stable. Working on adding adjustability to the shear mechanism to control the speed of the movement to minamalize shearing forces. The group also discussed some new aesthetic options to streamline the appearance for the chairs future models. They also covered some other “top secret” ideas in the works that will be revealed in time. These regular brainstorming sessions are significant to the ongoing process of improving the company’s standing power wheelchair.
Garlin "Red" Willingham & His New Black Hawk
14 June 2011
Since Red got his new Black Hawk Standing Power Chair about a month ago, he has called us no less than 5 times to express his complete satisfaction with our latest creation. Red can own any power chair of his choosing, and this is his 3rd Redman chair. He has done due diligence researching other brands of chairs prior to purchasing his 3rd Redman chair, so hearing him say our new chair is light years ahead of his old chairs means a lot to us. Red received our latest technology of extreme seat angle combined with high leg option allowing even greater body positioning. For quadriplegics such as Red, the extreme seat angle is a real contributor not only to lower sitting pressures but to greater sitting stability. In this video you will see Red doing high-speed brodies with his son and dog, Rupert, watching in the background. “I really like the cheap high I get when going around and around.”
